Getting free when a monster has you

What to do in R.E.P.O. when a monster has hold of you or a crew mate: the two kinds built around holding a player, why the picture and the sound are not yours while you are held, and how the crew gets you back on your feet.

Steps

  1. Work out which kind of monster has hold of you before you plan around it.
one monster is built around holding a player, and the grabbing kind gives the player it holds a camera of their own, so the game treats the two separately
  2. Do not guide yourself by the picture on your screen while you are held.
the held player is looking through the grabbing monster's own camera rather than their own, so what is on the screen is not where your head is
  3. Keep your bearings through the tilt and the muffled sound instead of treating them as damage.
the game feeds camera tilt into an audio mixer that distorts, lowers and shifts the pitch, each with its own maximum and speed, so the change is presentation rather than a second injury
  4. Read being held as a state your condition is tied to, not as a separate bar.
a player's condition is tied to the grabbing mechanic itself
  5. Put the fight into the monster, not into your crew mate.
fighting back uses separate weapon objects of its own rather than an unarmed struggle
  6. Make sure a revive device is in the crew before the run needs it.
reviving depends on a carried device with hands, a face, lights, two line renderers and a shockwave, so it is equipment rather than a command
  7. Watch the revive device's own readouts rather than the body on the floor.
the device carries spot, point and healing lights and keeps line renderers of its own between it and the target
  8. Check the health readout before deciding to push on after a grab.
players have tracked health of their own, shown in an interface of its own, and recovery uses a pack you carry
