The head and what it does

What the head in R.E.P.O. is made of before it reaches you: a controller driving hair, eyes and teeth, a float on curves, a staring eye with a beam, and a mouth that attaches.

Before you start

Steps

  1. Expect the head to be a machine with parts rather than one model.
a controller brings together its visual, its animation system and the transform it looks at
  2. Watch its hair, because it moves on springs of its own.
the hair has a parent, a target and its own position and rotation speeds, and a separate part tilts it with a random range and random times
  3. Read its eyes, because they carry a target and a pupil that changes size.
its eyes carry a target of their own, and the pupil keeps a size with a multiplier, a speed and a smallest and a largest size
  4. Learn the states you can catch it in, because the game names each one.
the animation system has separate entries for beginning a chase, the chase and its second loop, returning to idle, spawning, despawning and being hurt
  5. Listen for the teeth, because it chatters them while it waits.
it chatters its teeth, with a shortest and a longest idle time for it
  6. Expect it to float and to look under things rather than to stand on the floor.
its float is driven by a curve, a speed and an amount for its position and the same three for its rotation, and it can look under something with an offset
  7. Do not assume distance keeps a mouth off you.
the slow mouth attaches to a player with separate pieces for the top and the bottom of the face and uses a mouth in place of the player's own view
  8. Watch an eye creature for a beam rather than only for a look.
it carries a beam for each eye with particles of their own, and it has a sound for starting to stare and a loop while it stares
  9. Treat a mouth that heals as the one to keep away from the crew.
the tick has a mouth with two lips and a state for them, and its healing is an aura with a health pool, its own particles and a loop
