Melee weapons and their wear

A melee weapon is its own item with its own behaviour.

Melee weapons in R.E.P.O. are not a single swing: the game gives them durability that drains, a freeze on impact, a swing that can be aimed and turned, and a battery option.

What the game establishes

In play

A melee weapon is its own item. The game gives each one its own behaviour rather than one shared swing, which is why two melee weapons do not handle alike.

They wear out. Melee weapons drain durability when they hit monsters and other players, which is why a weapon is something that can be used up rather than kept forever.

Some of them run on battery. A melee weapon can be set to use battery logic, and it can have a broken mesh of its own, which is why a weapon can look as well as work differently when it is spent.

Hits freeze for a moment. The game keeps a hit freeze and a delay for it, so an impact registers rather than passing straight through.

The swing is tuned. There are settings for how fast a swing is detected, how much force a scroll adds, and how much torque it applies, which is why swinging is a controllable action rather than a single animation.

It is aimed. A melee weapon records which side it hits on and how far it tilts forward, so which way you are facing matters.

A swing can be handed over or tuned. A weapon can be set to leave its swing to logic alone, or to use a torque and a turn strength of its own with its own rotation and an orientation offset, which is why a heavy weapon and a light one do not move alike.

It is also audible and visible. Swinging has a sound and a loop, and a hit has a dink of its own with particles for both the swing and the dink.

It can be left to physics. A weapon can be set to use force rotation or to turn itself, which is why some of them behave like a held object rather than a fixed swing.

What this entry does not tell you: how much damage any of them does, how long durability lasts, or what one costs. We have not verified those numbers, so we do not print them.
