When the chat box will not open
The chat box has its own set of player states, including idle and typing.
The chat box in R.E.P.O. is not always ready: the game tracks whether a player is idle, typing or locked out while starting the truck or clearing slackers, and a message moves through states of its own.

In play
Typing is a state the game keeps track of. A player is either idle, typing, or locked out, so the game knows where your message is in its journey before it reaches anyone else.
Some jobs lock the chat. Starting the truck and clearing slackers both put a player into a locked state, which is why the box can refuse your input at the moment you most want to shout.
A message has states of its own as well. It begins inactive, becomes active, can be possessed, and is then sent, which is why a message can sit waiting instead of firing the instant you press a key.
It is all managed in one place, with a separate interface for the lobby and for the run, so talking before a level starts and talking inside one are handled by different screens.
What this entry does not tell you: how long a lock lasts, or how far a message carries. We have not verified those numbers, so we do not print them.
