The tricycle rider's rig

The rig has a set of wheels of its own.

The monster that arrives on a tricycle in R.E.P.O. is presented by a rig of its own: wheels, handlebars of their own kind, a body, a bell and a pedal crank, all posed on a spring system, with the wheels shaking on a spring that has its own speed and damping.

What the game establishes

In play

The creature on the tricycle is not animated by the enemy's own code. It has a rig of its own, which is why the thing riding the bike can be posed and shaken without the monster's behaviour having to know about wheels.

The wheels belong to the rig. There is a set of them, so how many the tricycle has and where they sit is part of the rig rather than of the model.

The handlebars are their own kind of object. There is a handlebar component as well as a transform for it, which is how steering can be shown on the vehicle rather than only described by where it is going.

It has the rest of the machine. There is a body transform, a bell transform and a pedal crank transform, so the parts that make the thing look ridden are each placed rather than baked into one shape.

The whole rig is posed on springs. It uses the game's spring pose system, which is why the rider and the bike settle and lean rather than snapping between poses.

The rider is placed on the machine part by part. Each hand, each foot and each of the two pedals has a transform of its own, which is how the creature can be posed as riding rather than being welded to the seat.

And the wheels have a spring of their own. There is a speed and a damping for the wheel shake, so how much the wheels rattle is a setting of the rig rather than something left to the animation.

What this entry does not tell you: how fast the rider moves, how many wheels the tricycle has, or how hard the shake is. We have not verified those numbers, so we do not print them.
